Ginkgo Bioworks

Reshma Shetty co-founded Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. in 2008. Shetty has helped grow Ginkgo Bioworks from its origins in a Cambridge, MA apartment to its current status as synthetic biology’s first unicorn, with $429 raised in funding to-date. She has also been integral in driving Ginkgo's major partnerships with customers across multiple markets, including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, enzymes and more. Ginkgo’s mission is to make biology easier to engineer, and the team has built foundries – labs that leverage software and hardware automation – to bring rapid iteration, prototyping and scale to organism design.

Shetty has deep experience in the field of synthetic biology, where she has been active for 10+ years. She co-organized SB1.0, the first international conference in synthetic biology in 2004. She also founded, a wiki for the free sharing of information among biological and biological engineering researchers, and has served as an advisor to the international Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition. In 2008, Forbes magazine named Shetty one of Eight People Inventing the Future and in 2011, Fast Company named her one of 100 Most Creative People in Business. Shetty has a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in Biological Engineering from MIT.
