Ryan Tappel

Senior Scientist, Synthetic Biology

Ryan is a Senior Scientist on the Synthetic Biology team at LanzaTech, a company that has developed a proprietary gas fermentation process that is revolutionizing the way the world thinks about waste carbon by treating it as an opportunity instead of a liability. Ryan and the Synthetic Biology Team are responsible for development of genetic tools and synthetic pathways as well as strain engineering of LanzaTech’s proprietary gas fermenting organisms with the objective of optimizing performance on carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide-containing gasses and expanding the product portfolio. Ryan specializes in enzymology-related research and is a technical lead and contributor to multiple academic collaborations and government-funded projects ongoing at LanzaTech, which have resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications. Ryan also provides support for LanzaTech’s commercial expansion via government relations and permitting efforts. Ryan received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, New York in 2013 and has been with LanzaTech for five years.
