Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR)

  • Jeroen Hugenholtz, Wageningen Food & Biobased Research

Researchers at WFBR develop insights and technologies that support industries, governments and consumers in the creation and production of healthy and tasty foods, of truly-sustainable food chains and in developing chemicals and materials that use biomass instead of fossil resources. For presentation at the World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology, WFBR has selected a couple of examples of biobased solutions for food and non-food applications. In the Food Area, we offer sustainable and clean-label production processes for several food ingredients, such as preservatives, flavours, texturizers and (unsaturated) fatty acids. In the Non-Food Area we describe sustainable production processes for bioplastics such as PHA, we demonstrate how (municipal solid) waste can be converted into jetfuel and other high-value chemicals, and we demonstrate various strategies to produce high value components from recalcitrant, and abundant, biomass such as lignin, chitin and pectin.
