PhylloTech Inc engineers plant leaf structures called glandular secreting trichomes to produce and deliver proteins directly to the plant leaf surface of many types of crop plants. The leaf surface is the initial battleground between the plant host and disease and insect pests, many of which cause real agronomic and economic harm. Trichomes continuously secrete high amounts of proteins to leaf surfaces as exudates, and large amounts of protein can be consistently deposited by trichomes over the vast leaf surface of an entire plant. Our method, called OnLeafEx, can continuously express anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-insect proteins onto the leaf surface as biopesticides, ultimately reducing toxic spray use, decreasing costs, and improving plant health and yield. This provides a first line of defense against pathogen and insect attack and could have broad implications for generating proprietary plant lines for the agriculture industry.
