Aquaculture is the fastest growing protein sector by far as fish are one of the healthiest forms of nutrition with a very low resource intensity. By 2030, two out of three fish consumed will be raised on a farm, representing a doubling from today’s production. However, the current formula of feeding farm-raised fish and shrimp marine ingredients like fishmeal derived from pelagics (anchovies) or terrestrial proteins (soy) represent incomplete solutions at best. We are approaching the limits for incumbent proteins and to grow this industry, we must find alternative protein sources. In this presentation, KnipBio will provide a description of one of the leading single cell protein (SCP) technologies. In early 2019, KnipBio’s SCP became the first to receive a GRAS notification from the US FDA-CVM. We will discuss the company’s technology, the steps taken to prove efficacy in feeding trials and the commercial trajectory for its novel KnipBio Meal (KBM) products.
