With a global population set to hit nearly 10 billion in 2050, the race is on to identify sustainable alternatives to conventional animal agriculture. Cellular agriculture has emerged as one such alternative, rocketing to regulatory prominence in 2018 from the states, to Capitol Hill to the halls of the FDA and the USDA. Likewise, the landscape for plant-based foods – ranging from meat analogues to dairy substitutes – has heated up in recent years, garnering significant investments from Big Food and resonating with consumers in the U.S. and around the world. This panel will explore how these products are made, the path to commercialization and, importantly, the regulatory and policy implications surrounding these groundbreaking technologies.
